Vision Changes? What Can You Do?
10 Simple Steps to Great Vision
Have you noticed that your vision isn't quite the same? Maybe you need your glasses more than you used to. Maybe you need glasses for the first time. What can you do to slow down those vision changes and improve your eye health?
1. Give your eyes rest. Take a break from the computer screen-at least every half an hour. Block your eyes from the light if you can, and enjoy the break by taking slow, deep cleansing breaths.
2. Greens, such as kale and spinach are very healing because they contain the phytochemical lutein. It is believed that lutein can help slow down some vision changes. It is best to cook the lutein-full leafy greens with olive oil or a little bit of butter to get the best benefits from them. Why? Because the lutein is fat soluble.
3. Limit your sweets-food with a high glycemic index. A 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition had very interesting and sad results for those of us who enjoy sweets. In the study, those who ate simple carbohydrates like cakes, cookies, white bread, or foods sweetened with sugar or corn syrup were more prone to blindness and eye damage than those who didn't eat the sweet goodies.(simple carbs) Watching your sweets can impact your vision changes.
4. Traditional Chinese Medicine considers whether eye problems are due to too much yang or yin. If you've got too much yang, you may have red eyes and with too much yin, you might be prone to floaters or blurry vision changes. Goji berries and juice is a common herbal treatment for blurriness. Juice can be taken, and I personally reap the benefits of drinking Goji Juice regularly. If you can purchase the berries, you can make tea by boiling 10 to 20 dgrams of berries in about 2 cups of water. Let this steep about 10 minutes. You can also eat a handful of the goji berries a few times a day. So, what about the redness? Chrysanthemum tea made by steeping 1-2 teaspoons of the flowers in about 2 cups of water for 5 minutes. You can put the flowers on your eyes and you can also drink the tea.
5. Overall, a healthy diet results in a healthy body. Strive to eat a diet full of whole, fresh, organic foods. Fruits and vegetables, beans and grains, nuts and seeds are a great foundation to your healthy diet. Looking for more tips about healthy eating? Just click here!
6. It is estimated that the nutrient value of fruits and vegetables we eat today is about 38% less potent nutritionally than it was decades before because our soil is depleted. Also, so many of the produce in our stores are grown in hot houses, picked 'green' and ripenned in boxes to be shipped. They might also be waxed to make them look better.
In 2002, the American Medical Association recommended that adults should take nutritional supplements daily to make up for this. This is probably because most of us do not come close to eating 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Even so, many healthcare providers really don't address nutrition with their patients. How can we not address this, though? Our nutrition is a building block of our health. Juice Plus is my favorite whole food supplement. Good research supports the benefits, the ingredients are reliable, and it is affordable. Definitely a good investment to your health even if you are able to eat a fairly balanced diet.
7. Enjoy your smoothies! They can be rich in antioxidants (see #8 below) and help provide the basic fruits and vegetables we all need.
8. Antioxidants can be very helpful to keep your eyes healthy. Not sure what an antioxidant is or where to find it? NO PROBLEM! Click here to learn more about Antioxidants.
9. Keep your appointments with your optomotrist or opthalmologist. They can look in your eyes and find problems early. Simple and complex problems can be diagnosed early and may even be avoided completely. Prevention and early detection are both important. If you are diagnosed with an eye disease, do your homework. Look for valid research about the nutritional aspects of the disease. You may be able to adjust your diet.
10. Remember that natural sunlight is a nutrient that we all need. Ideally, spend an hour outside in natural light each day. Take a walk in the morning or evening and enjoy the added benefit of exercise, too!
