Quit Smoking Tips Just for You!

Quit Smoking Tips

Tobacco use is a leading cause of illness and death. In fact, in the United States, one-fourth of all deaths are smoking-related. Did you know that it is anticipated that 1/2 of all teen-agers who smoke now will die from a smoking related-death. One Half!!

Nicotine dependency is just that-a dependency on a chemical substance called nicotine. That nicotine can certainly do tremendous damage to your body, mind and spirit. (Anytime you are dependent on something outside of yourself-it impacts your mind and spirit.) Avoid being a statistic- Follow some of the quit smoking tips and end your smoking dependency once and for all.

1. Decide to quit-set a date and stick to it

2. Throw away the tobacco products, matches, lighters, ashtrays and anything else that has to do with your tobacco use (okay, not your room-mate or spouse)

3. Any new habit is made easier with a buddy-system. Your new habit is a healthy lifestyle, without tobacco, by the way. So, enlist that room-mate or spouse of yours.

4. Get rid of the tobacco smoke smells by vacuuming the car and your home and wash your clothing. You may have to scrub the walls and ceilings, even. Wash or have your drapes dry cleaned. Smoke smells (and the chemicals left behind) can linger for a very, very, long time, so just try to get rid of them right away. Once you've done all this cleaning, the thought of dirtying up your home or car might just stop you from lighting up.

5. Avoid other smokers until you no longer crave tobacco.

6. Keep gum or sugar-free hard candy nearby to help ease urges. Most urges pass in about 5 minutes. If you can hold out for that long, you've made it through the tough time. This is true for most cravings.

7. Find a cessation program that works for you- these might include:

Group Support & Meetings
Hypnosis
Creative Imagery
Acupuncture
Prayer
Massage
Meditation
Medication

8. Decide how you want to quit:

Cold Turkey-Many people are successful with this

Taper Off-you gradually smoke less and less
