Oprah recently discussed her thyroid condition bringing more attention to the condition.

The thyroid is a small gland in the front of your neck. It may be small, but it's work touches about every other part of your body. Symptoms such as fatigue, depression and weight gain could be the result of a slow thyroid. Sometimes a slow working thyroid can be missed for a while because these are also symptoms of a variety of conditions, such as stress.

If the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones that regulate your metabolism properly, you can experience hair loss, a puffy face, heavy periods in addition to the fatigue, depression and weight loss. Dry skin, hair and eyes are also symptoms. It isn't fun! Heart disease and infertility can be the consequences if the condition is not treated.

A simple blood test can tell your health care provider if your thyroid is working up to speed. So, if you are having any of these symptoms, be sure to let your healthcare provider know.

Natural health advocates, including Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., author of From Fatigued to Fantastic! suggest natural homrones such as Armour Thyroid. Armour Thyroid contains the thyroid hormones T4 and T3. The synthetic hormones contain only T4 and then the body converts it to T3. Some bodies are better at this conversion than others. If you are taking synthetic thryoid now, and want to convert to Armour Thyroid, be aware that your dose may be very different and it may take a little of that 'medical art' to get just the right dose for you.

What Can You Do?

Take a Multivitamin with B Complex, zinc, selenium and tyrosine.

Take a mixed fatty acid supplement to help treat your dry skin, hair and eyes. These are common symptoms of a slow thyroid.

As always, eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, olive and fish oils and low in animal fats. Watch out for the processed foods. Cut back on the sugar and white flour, also.

If you can't always get a well balanced diet (and who does!?) consider an additional supplement of whole foods. I have my favorites based on scientific research and years of experience.

Be sure and get enough antioxidants. Ideally, you'll get this from your diet from fruits and vegetables and also powerful juice. I prefer Goji Juice.

Avoid raw cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower and also concentrated soy shakes and supplements. These can disrupt thyroid function.

Boost Your Metabolism with Exercise Resistance exercise like weightlifting, pilates and even some yoga can really boost your metabolism.

Get Your Sleep Many of us are sleep deprived, and many of us are chronically sleep deprived. Most of us need about 7-9 hours a day.
