Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are very common in North America. They are, in fact, the most common psychiatric disorder. I've talked a lot about everyday type stress and anxiety on this website, but there is also the kind of anxiety that just doesn't go away and can even be very debilitating. Anxiety can be mild to severe.
Some anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and certain phobias. Depression often tags along, although sometimes depression comes first.

Anxiety Triggers?
Many people do not know what triggered their severe anxiety. Others can tell us exactly what the cause was whether it was some traumatic expereince in their lives, war, loss of loved ones, serious financial challenges, thyroid problems, and even major life changes like marriage and child birth.

What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is that feeling of impending doom, nervousness, tenseness and worry. It is diffult to describe anxiety, and many would claim that anxiety and stress don't exist at all unless we create them ourselves. Whether we create it or not, it can cause some serious problems including heart palpitations, high blood pressure, various intestinal problems, head-aches, lost work time and relationship crises.

What Causes Anxiety?
Certain chemical imbalances in the brain can cause people to experience more anxiety and worry than expected. It is also more difficult to just 'turn it off.' Even so, there are measures that can be taken to feel less anxiety. sometimes just feeling more in control of our own anxiety can help to decrease the anxiety. Afterall, fear of the unknown is a bigfactor with anxiety. In other words, just not knowing what is going to happen next is a big trigger. Control over situations cannot always be achieved, yet the anxious person is yearning for it.

How can I feel more in control?
Awareness: First you need to be aware of potential anxiety triggers. Certain situations or people can lead you to feel fear-fear of the unknown or fear of something previously experienced. Anxiety during an airplane flight is fear of the unknown-not knowing if the plane will arrive safely or crash. Fear related to something in the past might be related to some past abuse or maltreatment.

Natural Anxiety Cures: Prevention
10 Steps You Can Begin Today!
1. Be sure to get enough sleep. You cannot function properly without enough sleep and rest.
2. Try to become stress resistant as much as you can. Stress in the body can be deadly. I've written several pages about stress. Anxiety and stress are closely related. Depression and anxiety are closely related also. It is sometimes difficult to know which came first-the depression lead to anxiety or the uncontrolled anxiety lead to depression. Treatment is different, though, so you might want to think about this.
3. Eat as healthy as possible. Good nutrition is a requirement of a happy, healthy life. I've devoted many pages to helpful tips. Find what works best for your body.
4. Find joy, peace and happiness in your life. Anger, anxiety, worry and negative thoughts will show up in your body. If you are feeling a lack of joy and peace, check out the pages on spirituality.
5. Stay active: find some kind of physical activity you enjoy. Be sure and have fun. Our body produces natural anti-anxiety chemicals when we move around. It is so much healthier for you to create your own anti-anxiety cure than to take a pill.
6. Try yoga, meditation or some other 'mindful' activity such as prayer.
7. Treat yourself to a massage or a series of massages. Massage is great for the body in a variety of ways and can also be very soothing.
8. Acupuncture and acupressure can help.
9. See your healthcare provider if your anxiety begins to impact your work, relationships and/or relationships. Discuss treatment options, and if you are interested in natural anxiety remedies such as natural medicines, be sure to include that in your discussion.
10. Talk to someone-see a therapist who has experience supporting people with anxiety problems. You'll be amazed just how helpful it can be to just talk about your problems.

Natural Medicines
St. John's Wort is sometimes used for depression, but not a lot of research shows it is helpful for anxiety. It interacts with several medicines, too. SAMe is another natural medicine that helps with feelings of depression, but not anxiety.
You may have heard of Kava. When I lived in Hawaii, there were actually Kava Bars. What mellow places those must've been! Kava tea is well known for its anti-anxiety benefits. It is considered to have a slower effect on the body than some of the prescription medicines like Xanax and Valium. I knew of people who had trouble staying awake and driving home from the Kava bar, though. Perhaps quantity had something to do with it. There is a reason we don't see a lot of Kava bars around anymore. People experienced liver problems-serious liver problems. Several countries have even banned it. I wouldn't risk it, but if you do, have your liver checked (blood tests) regularly.
Valerian root is used by some people to help with anxiety. The research of its effectiveness with anxiety isn't real strong, but I know people who feel they have gotten good results. It is probably safe, also.
Skullcap is another herb that some people have found helpful to reduce anxiety. It doesn't seem to help a lot with more serious, persistant anxiety, though. Safety hasn't been determined either.
You may hear about Theanine which is in green tea. Although it has been used for some forms of anxiety, once again the persistant, severe anxiety disorders don't seem to respond well to it. So far it looks safe, but like many of the herbs, scientific research hasn't really established this.
