Are You a Human Being or a Human Doing?

This is a funny question, isn't it? You are a Human Being, of course! I have to wonder about myself, sometimes.

I get so busy doing this and doing this other thing, and oh, yeah-doing something else, too-I forget to just BE! Can you relate? It seems that there is so much stock in how much we accomplish that how we are and are very 'being' is lost in the shuffle.

  • How often do you just sit and be with God?
  • How often do you just sit and be with yourself?
  • How often do you just sit and be with the ones you love and who love you?

Is there anything you can do that is more imporant than this?

I received a rather upsetting email from upper management at work the other day. It was basically an email sent out to many of us about how we need to do more. Prior to this many people left and the ones left really worked hard to keep things going. We sacrificed our own family life for the business (a very important business, but still). Nobody wanted to hear that it wasn't good enough. When I read the rather lengthy note, I was mostly angry at myself for choosing to 'do' for others who obviously didn't appreciate my offerings and not be present for the ones who mean so much to me-including myself.

I choose today to begin my life as a human being and put doing second on the list.

  • I vow to spend more time in quiet contemplation and prayer.
  • I vow to meditate on the beauty around me and to be quiet long enough to hear the words of God.
  • I vow to act more loving to those I love so much rather than be busy with nonsense.
I vow to be a loving Human Being, which is probably what life is all about afterall.

Prayer is an important part of being a Human Being for many of us
