Food Safety

Food Safety: From Market to Mouth-What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?
There is a lot of anxiety about food safety with recent food recalls and questions raised about how foods are cared for. Our food really gets around! The distance it travels from origin to our tables can be more than most of us travel in our lifetimes.
  • Did you know that 20% of our bell peppers come from other countries such as Mexico? I live in Texas, so I know this for sure. Labels on produce now also tell me so. Canada and the Netherlands are also big supplies for us because they have very large greenhouses.
  • Dairy is one food supply that the United States has tight trade agreements with, and so only about 6% of our dairy is imported. States that supply a large percentage of our dairy include California, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania and Idaho.
  • Around 40% of our tomato supply comes from Canada, Mexico and a few other countries. California supplies the bulk supply for us, though.

Yes, our food really gets around! Imported meat, poultry and eggs and all organic foods are overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Over $466 bilion dollars in domestic and imported processed foods, fruits, seafood, grains and vegetables as well as medications and vaccines are overseen by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I don't need to tell you that this is a huge job!

How much do you know about what goes on in other countries?

So, we must all do our job, too, when it comes to food safety.

You can learn more from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. There are a lot of things you can do, too!

Learn 8 Easy Things You can Do to help assure that the food your purchase or grow is healthy and safe. These are kind of fun, too! I've done them all, and will even try to pop a nice photo of our little garden in. A nice steady rain all day yesterday provided some much needed nutrients. How's that-something beautiful that saves you money, provides exceptional nutrition, is good for the earth and is safe for your family? I've gardened since I was a young girl, but gardening is just part of the story. Read on...
