Feng Shui

What is Feng Shui?

Written by Kerri Miller (see below for bio)

Simply put, Feng Shui is a way of setting up your environment to support what you desire – whether it be health, wealth, love or more. Feng shui can be used to adjust your environment so that the energy in it and flowing through it benefit and support you, rather than working against you. Energy is everywhere, even if it can't be seen.

Feng Shui and Your Space

At first it may be hard to consider how the environment we spend our time in can affect us in such a big way. It may be easier to think of it in terms of extremes – which space would you prefer to spend your time in – a cold, dim, damp basement with leaky pipes, and furniture that smells musty . . . or a bright, warm, sunny room with fragrant flowering plants and cozy furniture? Most of us would choose warm and sunny over dark and cold!

Need More Energy?

In Feng Shui, we would say that one space is receiving a good flow of balanced energy, also called chi, and the other is not receiving enough. Anyone that spends a lot of time in these spaces would be affected by that same energy flow. Consider how you would feel after spending time in each space. Would the warm room leave you relaxed and refreshed? And perhaps the cold room would leave you tired and achy.

Which room supports your health?

Which room feels more rich and abundant?

Which room would a lover be drawn to find you in?

Which room inspires your creativity?

Which room would your family prefer to gather around in?

As you consider these ideas you can start to see how your environment can impact your life situations.

Feng Shui and Energy

According to the principles of Feng Shui, everything (yes, everything . . . even that musty couch!) in our world is alive and interconnected. Our homes and work spaces are direct extensions of ourselves. When we use Feng Shui to arrange a space with appreciation and intention, our environment can help enhance our overall wellbeing. With a little thought and a bit of listening to our intuition, most of us can easily figure out what needs to be done to make a space feel better. Even a dark, dim basement can be balanced to allow better energy flow and positive life experience!
About Feng Shui Consultations

When a Feng Shui consultant assesses a space they are considering many different factors that affect the chi in the space (and affect the wellbeing of those in the space). Consultants use a tool called a bagua map to assess the way the chi enters and flows through a home. The bagua map is an energetic grid that is placed over your living or work space to see how the energy flows in a space.

The bagua map has 9 sections that each correspond to a specific life area – career, knowledge, family, wealth, reputation, love, creativity, health, and helpful people. (Note: Some consultants will place the map using the entrance as a marker, others will use a compass to determine how to place the map. Either way is effective.) From the map, the consultant determines where the energies for each life area lie and then will look at the space to see where chi energy may be misdirected, or stagnant, and adversely affecting any of the life areas. Suggested adjustments can be made or areas can be enhanced as needed.

Consultants also consider the balance of 5 elements in a space – earth, metal, wood, water and fire. Generally spaces that have a balance of all elements simply feel better and more comfortable to be in. When the elements are out of balance they can adversely affect us. Too much wood in a space can keep us “rooted” and unable to move forward. Too much metal can make us “rigid” and inflexible. Too much fire can cause you to be aggressive or to “burn out”. Too much water can leave us emotional and susceptible to “water works”. Too much earth and we are “grounded” and unable to dream. Once an imbalance is corrected the chi flows easier and the space feels more pleasant and supportive.
Finally, a consultant also takes a good look at the objects you surround yourself with. Our outer environment is usually a pretty clear reflection of our inner thoughts and patterns. Often we are keeping ourselves from moving forward just by surrounding ourselves with things that keep us stuck. Often you’ll find someone wanting to attract a relationship who has surrounded themselves with symbols of being single and alone. Or another who desires more prosperity but surrounds themselves with discounted belongings. Shifting or replacing items with those that are supportive of our goals and desires can help us get to where we want to be.

Feng Shui is one healing modality. Remember to learn about others!

Why Feng Shui?

Our conscious mind may have learned to mentally override the distractions in our life, and ignore what makes us feel uncomfortable. But our bodies and subconscious mind are still keenly aware of what is out of balance. We are constantly interacting with the objects around us. A feng shui consultation can help you become aware of how these environmental and the patterns we create in our spaces are affecting all aspects of our life. Simple adjustments can make the space more balanced, and supportive of who you are and what you want.
