Egg Types

Confused by the Different Egg Types?

Cage-Free: These birds are raised in a cage free environment. Who would have guessed!? They generally roam the floor of the barn rather than in a cage. No word on how many chickens live in the barn, though.

Certified Humane: These chickens are certified by Humane Farm Animal Care and are able to nest, perch, and live in a 'natural' chicken lifestyle.

Free of Antibiotics, Chemical or Hormones: These chickens are fed food that is free of hormones. There are also no antibiotics or chemicals used in the production.

Free Range: Chickens eat bugs and grass. Free Range hens are given outdoor access so they can chow down on natural foods-bugs and grass.

Nutrient-Enhanced: How are nutrients added to eggs? Some producers add flaxseed, marine algae or marigolds to the feed given to the chickens. The eggs produced might be advertised as 'omega-3 enriched' or 'folate fortified' or 'high in lutein' eggs.

Organic: These eggs are USDA certified as organic and come from free range chickens that eat feed that has no antibiotics or pesticides.

Vegetarian Feed: These hens aren't fed any animal products.

Now that you Know Egg Types, do you know if eggs are Friend or Foe?
