Well Being Through Spirituality
Well Being Through Spirituality
Spirituality is a basic part of who we are and yet it is poorly understood by many of us. It is a rather difficult concept that requires acceptance, and yet well-being cannot be achieved without addressing your spiritual needs. Afterall, we are all spiritual beings, no matter what your beliefs are, because we are human. You've probably heard this before, but it is worth repeating:
We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
Remember, as human we are naturally holistic with body, minds, and spirits. We are also social beings and we can't forget about relationship spirituality. Not sure what this means? Don't worry- I'll make it simple.
Well Being Through Spirituality
This happens to be one of my favorite subjects. I was first exposed to spirituality and healing about 13 years ago when I started my master's program in nursing. I'm pretty sure that my classmates thought I was nuts as I quietly (okay, not so quietly) steered away from the body-focused healthcare to embrace a more holistic approach. I was already a holistic nurse, but I didn't know it. The part of holism I didn't know much about was spirituality, and I just couldn't get enough. You get the benefits of my obessive reading and learning! There is more to my story and how spirituality really changed my life, but I'll save that for later. I think this is called a tease, but I'll give you a hint-take a look at the 'about me' page.

Let's Define Spirituality
There are many definitions out there, and many of them aren't so clear. Before I define spirituality, let's just make it clear what spirituality is not.
Is there a difference between religion and spirituality?
Yes! Think of the term 'spirituality' as an umbrella and 'religion' as a term which is under that umbrella. It
may be a part of one's spirituality, but it doesn't have to be. If you are religious, you are probably spiritual, though.
Let's define spirituality by taking a look at our spiritual needs. We all have spiritual needs.
If our spiritual needs are not met, we might feel some distress-also known as spiritual distress. You have probably felt spiritual distress many times, but you probably didn't know it. You may not have been able to even identify why you felt distress, but you will now. AND, you will learn how to avoid it in the future if you keep reading.
Spiritual Needs

Not all needs have to be met at all times, but they must all be addressed. If this is new to you, address each item one at a time-one step at a time. Wallow in it, experience it, enjoy it,learn from it and grow spiritually.
Your whole life will be improved. I believe that when our spiritual needs aren't met, we experience depression.

So, are your basic spiritual needs being met? If you have any needs at all, your spiritual, physical and mental needs are most essential. Other needs that seem to take priority over these-our need for more money, more toys, more...
That's okay, because you are here and you're going to be learning how to take simple steps toward a more meaningful, holistic health lifestyle.

Although all the needs are important, these are needs that are often overlooked. Actually, many of the needs are overlooked in our busy lives, but let's start with love.
There are many different kinds of love, and the word sure gets thrown around a lot. We love our families, our friends, our pets, our homes, our cars, shoes-okay-you get the picture. Have you ever thought about your own ability to be loved. Many people are not capable of accepting love. What are ways we can express love? How can having love in your life have any impact on your well-being and your spirituality?

Let's take a look at the 'connectedness' needs. Another way to look at connectiveness is relationship spirituality. We can have many different types of relationships, and our spirituality is impacted by each one-from the most profound to the most mundane.
Have you ever spent some time with friends laughing and talking when you felt just so close to them and so happy and content? If so, you've experienced that feeling of connectiveness. When you experience it, you know it. I had a profound experience with connectiveness when my son was in Iraq. Click on the link below to read more.

We have relationships with other people, of course. We also have relationships with nature-including animals. When was the last time you got out in nature and really experienced it-without distraction? Did you know this experience with nature is actually healthy for you? It is!

Have you ever thought about the time you spend with yourself? Time alone happens to be very important to your health and is a requirement for optimal holistic health. The place you choose to spend this time is your sacred space. Sacred space can be indoors, outdoors and sometimes just a good place in your imagination. Creating this sacred space for yourself is very important.

HUMOR
You may have heard about studies and antecdotal stories about people who've healed themselves and cured diseases through laughter. There is alot to be said about this. Laughter helps us to feel connected with others, reduces those pesky stress hormones, takes our minds off of the dredges of the day and offers us plenty of other wonderful benefits. What could be more fun?
There was laughter in my home growing up. We laughed at each other; we laughed at each other; and we laughed at movies and television. I raised my son with a lot of laughter as well. It really made difficult times much easier to handle, and made happier times even happier.
This is so much fun-you don't want to miss it!

MEANING AND PURPOSE
Have you ever thought about what your meaning in life is? How about your purpose? Why are you here? What are you meant to do? These are huge questions that should probably be asked often. Why often? Because we usually find meaning in purpose in the current happenings in our lives. These change and so do we. Our overall purpose and meaning may not be known for decades. The point of wellbeing and spirituality is having the guts to ask these questions and to really listen for the answers. The tough part-acting on those answers. It may not be easy and it might mean some huge changes if you really follow the guidance to follow your purpose and meaning. Many people opt to ignore the guidance and continue on with their lives. You know what-they're never quite happy because they're not living the life they were meant to live and the sense of fulfilment is missing. Is this you? Do you know?
Health and happiness can be yours, but not unless you are living your true life.
I've had to ask these questions, and take those big steps. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it.

BELIEF IN HIGHER POWER
Belief in a higher power is also a spiritual need. This is similar to the connectiveness with a sacred source.
What is a sacred source or higher power?
One definition of higher power or sacred source is a mystery that is beyond words.
Some of the terms you might be familiar with are:
God
Life Force
Allah
Lord
Goddess
Absolute
Spirit
Well Being Through Spirituality
I'll use the term God from here on out for the term sacred source and higher power. God is a concept bigger
than about anything the human mind cn conceptualize, yet we continue to bridge that gap and connect one way or another.

What are the ways we connect with God?
We connect in a variety of ways and we learn new ways as our lives go on.
Prayer is a common way we connect with God. I like to think of this as the way WE communicate with God. We're doing the talking and the asking. There is nothing wrong with this, but it can be one-sided.

Another way we connect with God is through Stillness. I like to think of this as the time we are still enough to hear God's messages back to us. Meditation is one way to be still, but there are others.
Another we connect with God is through ritual. There are religious rituals and personal rituals. Rituals are big for me. I've always felt like the rituals kept me connected. Rituals are easy ways to connect with God and others.
Are you having a tough time with being still? Embracing rituals might be a great starting place for you.

We also connect with God by being in nature and connecting with nature-something far greater than ourselves. Connecting with loved ones is also communing with God.
See how ourlives are filled with opportunities to commune with God? You will actually have a difficult time finding an opportunity that is NOT an opportunity to be closer to God.
Why? God is everywhere and in everything.
You'll learn more about this by reading about prayer.
Well Being Through Spirituality
Gratitude is another spiritual need that can't be overlooked. There has been alot in the media lately about
gratitude, and I'm real happy about this. Gratitude gives us a sense of reverence that arises from a deep appreciation of our human limitations and a sense of awe in relation to what seems like it is out of our control.
Learning about spirituality is so exciting- I know! Don't forget that spirituality is only one peice of the holistic puzzle-there's body, spirit, and mind.
