Stress Busters

Stress Busters

Stress doesn't kill, but our response-emotions and feelings-to the stress can cause serious harm. It doesn't have to though. Bust the stress and save your life!

There are many ways (Stress Busters)to begin to become stress resistant. Stress affects your overall health. We know this. Stress in your body can do great harm, so let's take a look at some ways to reduce the impact of stress in your body. There are several techniques and practices. I recommend you decide what techniques or practices speak to you. Begin by integrating them into your life a little at a time. This is how to begin living an optimal holistic lifestyle. In fact, be sure your plan to reduce stress is something you enjoy and you can integrate long-term.

Stress Busters: Why SO Important?

Did you know that the American Institute of Stress tells us that up to 90% of health problems are related to stress?
There is a lot of research that tells us that our thoughts and emotions have a strong impact on our health and feelings of overall well being. Did you really need the research to prove it to you? I doubt it. Most of us have been a victim of our response to stress whether it is a minor response such as a head-ache or a serious response such as high blood pressure.

THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Ways to experience those POSITIVE EMOTIONS

Enjoy your relationships with others and nature.

Enjoy your surroundings-take it all in and feel real gratitude for what you have. Sometimes we get so consumed thinking and working toward what 'want' that we don't stop and enjoy what we 'have.' It is living in the present rather than living in the future or past. It isn't so easy to think in the present, but you'll be much happier.

Exercise Not only does exercise create a rush of endorphins (happy hormones) into your system, it helps to build a strong immune system. There are many benefits to exercise and busting stress is just one of them.

Meditation practice can relieve anxiety and reduce the impact of stress.

Yoga (The practice of yoga can be physical as well as mental and spiritual. Many yoga classes are offered that are purely physical, although yoga generally includes breath meditation and a spiritual practice. The spiritual practice can be your own.)

Did you know that Prayer is a stress buster? This is true! In fact, attention to your spiritual life can be incredibly stress busting.

Another HUGE key to reducing the stress affect on your overall health is NUTRITION . Food is medicine and food is preventative.
Not only can the food build our immune system and help keep us stress resistant, but there are also foods that directly impact our emotions. I've devoted a page to FOOD AND FEELINGS.

Imagery and Creative Visualization

Body Work therapies can be healing and relaxing. Some examples are:

Massage

Healing Touch and other body energy healing modalities (Energy work is not new, but it is new to a lot of us. The research is very exciting, and you'll find more and more practitioners out there.)

Reflexology (one of my personal favorite!)

Aromatherapy

Time in a hot-tub

Showering

Stress Busters

Are you surprised to see 'showering' on the list? I'm about to share a commonly known, yet seldomly discussed secret among women: We take showers to unwind. In truth, we do more than unwind: many of us use the time in the shower to cry. Seems odd? I thought I was strange for looking forward to a hot shower to relax and drop all vulnerability and just cry. Sometimes I cry for joy and others for frustration and sadness. When I mentioned this to other women, I was astonished at how many told me their own stories. So why do we cry in the shower?
My theory: The warm water running over our body from our heads to our toes is symbolic and cleansing-not just cleansing for our bodies, but cleansing for our spirits. Afterall, when you imagine yourself being showered with joy, you don't imagine it over your hands or over any particular body part. The shower of light/joy is all over the body.
Another reason some women seem to feel free to cry in the shower, is the vulnerability. When are you more vulnerable than standing naked in the shower? If all goes as planned, no one can hear you, no one will know and you are free to be who you really want to be-if only for 5 or 10 minutes. The time alone is priceless. And oh, how healing the experience is!

Stress Busters

HeartMath's research has shown that when you experience a positive emotion, your heart rhythms immediately change to a more regular (coherant pattern). Negative thoughts and feelings make the rhythm irregular and jagged. Thoughts and emotions impact the heart's rhythms. This rhythm-whether it be steady and smooth or erratic-directly impacts performance. Have you heard people who tell themselves how stupid they are, or how terrible at ____ they are?.

Guess what kind of heart pattern they have? If you answered erratic, you are correct! This erratic (incoherent) pattern makes it more difficult for the brain to function, diminishes your visual field, slows down your reaction time and takes your usual decision making skills down a notch. Who needs that?

The (emWave PC) software gives the user the ability to identify when their heart is racing and do something about it. It even gives feedback for the more discreet tiny changes in the heart rhythm. You can learn techniques to manage your response while under pressure and in tense situations so you can use those situations to their best advantage, both athletically and in life.
