Optimal Holistic Health: Smoothies Make it SO EASY!

Phytonutrients are nutrients in fruits and vegetables. It would be great if we could tweak them out and make supplements out of them, but they, in fact, need one another to be as powerful as they are. They work synergistically. Consider how much stronger a group is than easy individual member.

Whole food supplements come about as close as you can get, as far as supplements are concerned. I take these, although I also take it one step further in my goal of obtaining optimal holistic health. I did a little money-shifting by putting change I used to spend on a soda a day (not a good choice, by the way) toward whole food supplements (a much better choice).

Some kind of supplementing is important because even if you eat a perfectly healthy diet, the food just isn't as packed with nutrients the way it used to be. Fruits and Vegetables Required!


How are you doing with the 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables? That is 5-9 servings a DAY, by the way, not WEEK. Very few of us reach this goal, and guess what? In 2005, the USDA Dietary Guidelines Committee recommended a minimum of 9 servings a DAY. An example of 9 servings: (4) 1/2 cup servings of fruit and (5) 1/2 cup servings of vegetables PLUS 3 or more servings of whole grains daily.

Does this sound impossible to you?

The latest report from the USDA also recommends a whole food diet rather than dietary supplements. The nutrients from the whole food recommendations are essential-that's right-ESSENTIAL to a long and healthy life. Many of us can't manage to come near the daily recommended servings, though.

Optimal Holistic Health and the VitaMix

That's my husband in the photo, by the way. I'm very blessed that he also strives to live a naturally, holistic lifestyle. He even tried yoga with me, but that's another kind of funny story.

I recommend the Vita-Mix because we use it here and it has made a big difference in how we eat. I've gotten so good at using it, that I will make a fruit and fiber smoothie in the morning before work. We sometimes have morning meetings with donuts or other high fat choices and I am able to pass.

The more you make healthy, holistic changes in your life, the more you will resist the harmful things. This might seem unbelievable to you, but it is true! Give it a try for just a few weeks, and you'll see!

Regular juicers are good for making juices, but you miss out on a lot of the fiber since it is discarded. I used a juicer before, and it was a mess to clean up. A juicer does help you to get a lot of the vitamins and liquid. A whole food juicer is a better way to make juice, smoothies, soups and sauces because the best part of the fruits and vegetables are not discarded. You get to benefit from them!

Using the Vita-Mix machine is not the only way to eat whole foods daily, but it is the best way I have found. I made promises to myself to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables and eat them regularly, but it was rather self-defeating, because like many of you, I am very busy. Food went bad before I could get to it, and I wasn't able to eat that much fruit and vegetables during the day. I had to find a way to get closer to my goal of optimal holistic health.

I promised to show you fast and easy ways to build an optimal holistic lifestyle for yourself, and I aim to keep my promise.

This is a typical smoothie for me. You can find other recipes, but this is my favorite. I mix it up a bit with different fruits, but I want to be sure and include those high in Vitamin C, and those packed with antioxidants.
