Do You Know the Joy of Music?

Is The Current Crisis a Crisis of Balance?
Well, we’re nearing the end of 2008, and many of us are really looking forward to 2009. This year has proven to be the year of uncertainty, although there isn’t real hope that 2009 will be different. Someone I admire said today, ‘it is more of a re-balance.’ When I hear the word balance, I have a tiny pang of guilt mixed with anxiety because I’m so far out of balance. It seems the harder I try to be in balance, the further away I get. Okay, I digress...

Stand Up For Your Body?
Do you have a sedentary lifestyle?
Do you sit around a lot at home or at work or at play? Research from the University of Missouri tells us that spending too much time sitting around can slow the way your body burns fat and cholesterol. If you don't burn it, it will accumulate! You know what that looks like. It not only accumulates on the body, but this accumulation starts a deadly path of disease promoting processes. Not good!
What can you do to help yourself if you've got a sit-down job?
Simply standing up gets the enzymes that help to maintain a healthy metabolism moving again. This helps to protect your body against disease.
**Stand up once in a while-at least once an hour
**Walk around some and stretch
**Do whatever you can while standing-file, sort paperwork...
Simply standing up once in awhile can make a bit difference!
Should a Pedometer be your Best Buddy?
Interesting Facts about Pedometers
There are some real advantages to wearing a pedometer-especially if you are competative with yourself. A pedometer helps you to watch your progress. I like immediate feedback! Did you know that people who wear a pedometer and set a goal for themselves will walk an average of a mile longer daily? The results: a lower body-mass-index (weight loss!) and a decrease in blood pressure. Wearing a pedometer can be heart healthy. Some are quite affordable, too. Take a look at the Amazon.com store.
Can A Pet Heal Depression?
Anyone who loves their pet, knows how their unconditional love can be healing. Just in case you needed some scientific research to prove it, read on:
** In 2003 a study was published in the American Journal of Cardiology that showed that men who had heart attacks were more likely to be alive after 4 years IF they had a dog. I love my dogs, so I can relate to this one!
** There was once a group of 48 stockbrokers with high blood pressure. Half of them adopted either a dog or cat and after 6 months, they had lower blood pressures. This study was done in 1999.
Why are animals so healing?
According to Stanley Coren, PhD, psycholgist and professor at the University of British Columbia and author of Why Does My Dog Act that Way? (Free Press, 2006) "Pets give you affection and support, whether you've earned it or not."
Walking your dog gets you out of the house and out with others. This social activity helps to boost your spirit, also. Even the physical touch of animals can help to lower stress levels.

Homeopathy and Oscillococcinum
You may have heard of oscillococcinum, which is a homeopathic remedy advertised to help prevent and help lessen the misery of the flu.
But, does it work?

Less Stress=Healthier Heart
Has science proven to us what we already know-stress hurts our heart? Yes, science has told us that stress raises our heart rate, adrenaline AND in chronic situations can be very harmful to our bodies. You've probably heard a lot about the impact of stress on the body.
Can stress actually raise your cholesterol level, though? High cholesterol levels can increase your risk of coronary heart disease.
There is more proof that your response to stress may actually increase your risk of serious heart disease according to a study by Loriena Yancura, PhD presented at the American Psychological Association's annual convention. Seven hundred and sixteen older men were studied. Those who coped better with stress had higher levels of the good cholesterol (HDL). Those who kept to themselves or lashed out had higher levels of bad cholesterol (LDL). Note that they didn't measure the amount of stress, but HOW the individuals coped with stress-the emotional response. This goes back to the thought of learning to be stress resistant. It would seem logical that even if you eat well and exercise regularly, if your stress is out of control, you are still at risk for heart disease. It won't be long before health care providers assess your stress response. Some of us already do that. Exercise can be a stress buster, too! Exercise, healthy eating, spiritual well being, and stress reduction can all save your heart!
Sunshine On My Shoulders...
Can sunshine reduce your chances of developing advanced breast cancer?
Some of you might remember when this song (1971 by John Denver) was on the Top 40 list. There is more to sunshine than the beauty of it. Taking in a bit of sunshine could actually help keep your breasts cancer-free. In a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers surveyed about 3,900 women. Guess what they found? It seems that light-skinned women who spent more time in the sun than the others had about half the risk of developing advanced breast cancer. The lead researcher, Esther John, PhD attributed this reduced risk to higher levels of vitamin D. He also noted that sun exposure produces less vitamin D in women with naturally darker skin. How much sunshine is needed, is still in question, although it seems that about 15 minutes a day (not at peak times because you don't want sun to damage your skin) might be enough. If you live in colder climates or areas where you don't have good sunshine year round, you can supplement with 800 to 1000 IU of vitamin D daily. Many calcium supplements now also have vitamin D with it. If you take Calcium 500mg/Vitamin D 400iu twice a day, you should get enough. You may see a variety of different types of vitamin D such as D2 and D3. Go for the D3 because it is more potent. Your health care provider can do blood tests to see if your vitamin D is low. If so, you may need to start with higher vitamin D levels.

Finding the Best Holistic Healthcare Provider for You!
Finding the Right Holistic Healthcare Provider:
How Holistic is YOUR Healthcare Provider?
We all need to have healthcare provider(s) that we trust. Trust is deep, though. We trust that they know their physiology (how the body works), they have our best interest in mind and that they see us as individuals. Many of us want our healthcare provider to have some knowledge about holistic health AND to believe that health is about having a healthy body, mind AND spirit. How will you know if they have this holistic philosophy?
It isn't unusual for a typical visit with your healthcare provider to last about 6 minutes that might even include the time it takes you to turn over your co-pay. One problem is addressed, and if you have more than one problem (hey, our time is valuable, too!) you'll need to return another time. Then you hear that the next available appointment is in 2 weeks!
It isn't this way everywhere, though! How do you find the right healthcare provider for you?

Need a Safe Way to Bring Down Triglyceride Levels?
Are you taking Omega-3 Fatty Acids to help lower the triglyceride level in your blood? Sometimes a higher concentration of fish oil is needed.
Not all fish oils are created equal. The EPA and DHA levels are key to helping to lower triglyceride levels. Look at your supplement closely, and purchase a supplement with 900mg or more Omega-3s (DHA/EPA) per capsule.
Watch: Sometimes the higher concentrated fish oil concentrate has only 200-400 mg of EPA and DHA. Guess what? You get plenty of other fats you really don't want!
Want to be sure you are getting enough? Your health care provider can now prescribe Lovaza which contains 3 to 4 times the typical amount of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. In fact, it appears that it would take about 12 to 16 capsules of a typical supplement to get the amount of Omega-3s you get in 4 capsules of Lovaza. If you need to lower your triglycerides, this may be a good option for you. Discuss it with your health care provider!
