Natural Holistic FAQs:
What does 'Holism' mean?

Holism is really a philosophy-more than an action. It is a philosophy with roots in Florence Nightengale who believed in health care that focused on general wellness, relationships between people, the environment and events of one's life. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, taught doctors to observe 'life circumstances and emotional states of patients.' It wasn't all about the body.

"Curing the Soul; that is the first thing" Socrates

Natural Holistic FAQs:
What is a holistic nurse?

As you probably know, the term 'nurse' means something different to many of us. There is alot of confusion between medical assistants, lab aids, nurses aids, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners and the list goes on.

A state license is required in order to be a 'nurse' and in some cases a certification is required, also. This is especially the case with nurse practitioners. Nurses either have an associate, bachelors, masters or doctorate degree. Holistic nurses have been recognized by the American Nurses Association as a specialist in their field. This is done through application and testing, and it is no easy task.

The American Holistic Nurses Certification Corporation (AHNCC) recognizes two levels of holistic nurses-Holistic Nurse Board Certified (HN-BC) for nurses with bachelor degrees and Advanced Practice Holistic Nurse-Board Certified (AHN-BC) for those certified who also have a masters degree or beyond.

I am an advanced practice holistic nurse- AHN-BC since 1999.

Natural Holistic FAQs:
Natural Holistic Health and Medicine stress self-care. What does that mean?

Self care is about those things that we can do everyday to help our body, minds and spirits be at their best. This promotes health and wellness.

Some examples include:

Body: Exercise (aerobic, strength and flexibility), grooming (skin care, teeth...), breathing, yoga and healthy, and conscious eating.

Mind: Quiet contemplation, meditation, music, presence, good old laughter and humor, and other stress busting and peak performance modalities.

Spirit: meditation, and prayer, reading sacred text or spiritual literature (I also like to listen to books on tape while driving to work, which is a wonderful way to feel steady and balanced before I even get to work!), journaling, gratitude, random acts of kindness, feeling connected, and practing true forgiveness.
