Meditation Practices
Meditation Practices
Let me begin by suggesting that you be patient, kind and gentle and go without expectation. That's right: do not have pre-conceived expectations, goals or plans. Your best experiences will be when you just allow them to happen.
Just wait and see where things go and enjoy the trip. Whatever happens is supposed to happen. No Stress all the way.
Meditation is an ancient practice, and even so, it is timeless. So long as we continue to seek meaning and a more spiritual existence, we will seek to practice meditation. Sure, the stress-busting benefits of meditation are wonderful, but once you achieve that, the strong desire to find meaning and purpose will follow. This is when priorities will fall into place and life will become much more joyful.

Meditation Practices: Breathing Meditation Breath and Navel Meditation
This is a great starting place for the beginner meditator and for times when we need a quick 'fix.' It is easy, but does take a bit of practice. Breathing is natural, though, of course. Meditative breathing isn't natural to many of us, but it can be!
Breath and Navel Meditation is the oldest meditation method on record in China as well as India, and it is the method usually taught to beginners. Breath and Navel Meditation works directly with the natural flow of breath in the nostrils and the expansion and contraction of the abdomen. This Taoist meditation is a good way to develop focused attention and one-pointed awareness.
Meditation Practices Color Meditation and Breathing
A lovely and very helpful exercise is Color Breathing or breathing in the rainbow.
The purpose of this is to heighten our awareness of color and to encourage a balance of all the seven main chakra (energy centers) colors for our well being. I think you'll fine the concept of chakra colors and how they relate your body and thoughts very interesting.
Meditation Practices: Mindfulness and Mindfulness Walking
Meditation Practices:Mindfulness and Mindfulness Walk
Many of us lead very 'stressful' lives. We run around trying to get things done, and try to get things done in a most-perfect way. We have a difficult time saying 'no' and our 'to do' list is over-flowing. It might seem like a daunting task to try and calm yourself for even a few minutes when there is so much to do. It isn't easy to be mindful or we would all be there more often. Life would be so much more calm because mindfulness behavior is contagious-just the way stressful
behavior is contagious. Think about a time when the world around you seemed to be just 'nuts.'
Remember a time when there was a lot of noice, activities, and your mind was racing. How did you respond to those around you: with kindness and patience or anger and frustration. How did they respond to you? Joy begets joy and stress begets stress.
If you would like to experience more joy, but you feel overwhelmed, Mindfulness walk might be just perfect for you. Some of us-like me-have a tough time sitting still. Mindfulness walking is a great form of meditation to try.
I've often referred to my evening or morning walk as my 'sanity walk,' I could probably use more of them. There is more to those walks than just sanity though. A Mindful Walk is so much more.
Yoga has become a fairly common 'physical' exercise for those of us in the United States. However, yoga is a lot more than just physical. Yoga is also one of the most popular meditative practices. If you see yoga as primarily a physical exercise, that's okay, because you still reap the benefits of relaxation and meditation even if you are not really aware of it.
There are many different kinds of yoga.
Karma yoga is the yoga of action and emphasizes service to others.
Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion and love of God.
Jnana yoga is the yoga of knowledge and emphasizes the intellect and striving.
Raja Yoga is considered the 'highest' form of yoga, and its primary purpose is to help manage the thought process and convert that physical and mental energy we have into spiritual energy. Meditation is a key part of this type of yoga.
Hatha yoga is a part of Raja Yoga. It incorporates yoga postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. It requires balance through mental and physical exercises.
Yoga is a wonderfully refreshing meditation practice that is also great for your body.
Meditation Practices: Prayer and Meditation
Christians and Hebrews use the word 'prayer' more than meditation. Prayer and meditation have a lot in common. Prayer can be very meditative and in fact, prayer, especially contemplative prayer, offers many of the same benefits as meditation. Although there is some controversy between the west and east, the basis of meditation and meditative practices are a personal matter. Meditation practices can enhance your religious practices. Your religious practices can enhance your meditative practice, also.
How about an interesting twist on meditation?
I like this meditation practice as a prayer. If you know someone who might be in need, you can practice the above meditation with that person in your mind's eye and send them white light. You can also use the other colors. I practiced this regularly when my son was in Iraq in the Army. I imagined him, the HumVee he rode in and the soldiers near him-all of them. I could do this rather quickly or spend a significant amount of time with this visualization. So can you!
Meditation practices are just one part of an optimal holistic lifestyle. A meditative, calm, peaceful, loving attitude encourages you to continue to take great care of yourself-body, mind AND spirit.
