Natural Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy Remedies
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) happens when the prostate gets bigger because it grows more cells. This is a very common condition for aging men because it is the result of hormone changes. In fat, 90% of men 70 years old have an enlarged prostate. Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is not the same as prostate cancer, though. The prostate is enlarged with BPH, but not because of cancer. It sure does impact the man's life, though!
Does having BPH mean that there is a greater chance of developing prostate cancer?
No, it doesn't appear so. However, it is important to have a thorough initial evaluation and continue to keep those follow up appointments!

Symptoms
Because the prostate is bigger, it affects the way a man is able to urinate.
Some of the symptoms include:
Difficulty getting a good urine stream-even dribbling and stopping/starting
Feeling like the bladder doesn't empty (and it often doesn't empty completely!)
Frequent trips to the bathroom to try and empty the bladder completely
Urination at night (called nocturia)
A sense of urgency and sometimes a little leaking with that urgency

Prevention?
Saw Palmetto is a common herbal remedy men take to help prevent BPH. Based on scientific research, it doesn't look like it will really help.
Good News!
It looks like if you take good care of your heart, you will also help out the prostate!
Diet: Eat plenty of raw spinach, peaches, legumes, cruciferous (dark, leafy) vegetables and fruits and vegetables with plenty of beta carotene (carrots, sweet potatoes, contaloupe, mangoes) and vitamin C.
Isoflavones (found in legumes-soybeans) may play a role, but this hasn't really been determined for sure. If you take a blood thinner like warfarin (coumadin) or have blood clotting issues, be sure and talk with your health care provider before changing your diet a whole lot. Soybeans have Vitamin K and it can interact with some medications.
Get your exercise! Execise has shown to help prevent prostate problems. This might be because excess body fat can affect hormone levels which can then impact the prostate. No matter how you look at it physical activity is helpful!
Exercise can help with BPH? Sure-Give it a try!
Excess calorie intake (eating too much!) can increase your risk of developing prostate problems. This may also have to do with an increase in body fat.

Prescription & Herbal Medications
Alpha-blockers are a class of medications that work well for symptoms of BPH. They also work fairly fast to give the man some relief from the symptoms. Another class of medications are called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, and these work well, also. They are sometimes used in combination with alpha-blockers. These may be prescribed after a thorough exam is done. That means that a man is examined to be sure that he doesn't have prostate cancer or other conditions that might make these medications unsafe.
Herbal medications are over the counter and easy to get. This doesn't mean that they are necessarily safe or that directions shouldn't be followed very closely. A medication (herbal or prescription) can be a miracle. It can also be a poison under the right circumstances. Have respect for your body! Be sure and see your health care provider to have your symptoms evaluated before you take any herbal products. You want to be sure you are taking the most appropriate product for your needs.
Saw Palmetto is commonly used to help with frequent urination, difficulty with stream and bladder emptying and urgency. It works pretty good, too-even comporable to Proscar which is one of the prescription 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It doesn't work as quick as the alpha-blockers and usually takes about 1-2 months before men feel improved. Research has been mostly positive using a specific extract of saw palmetto berry with 80-90% fatty acids. Look for this, also since studies haven't shown the benefits of the others yet. Some examples are: Super Saw Palmetto (Enzymatic Therapy), ProstaPro (PhytoPharmica), Standardized Saw Palmetto Extract (Nature's Way) and others. You'll need to look for the specifics, but it shouldn't be that tough. Aim for 320mg of the saw palmetto extract a day, and remember to see your healthcare provider before starting this or any other herbal remedy. Some people experience dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea.
Pygeum is another herbal product that seems to help prostate symptoms such as night time urination, poor urine stream, and poor bladder emptying. We're just not sure how it compares to prescription medicines yet.
Beta-sitosterol is in many herbal combination products and seems to help with BPH symptoms, also. It is also in the cholesterol lowering margarine, Take Control. If you've got high cholesterol and BPH symptoms, this might be a tasty option for you.
African wild potato seems to help with some BPH symptoms and may lower blood sugar. Watch this if you take diabetic medication, because it might lower your sugars too low. I say 'might' because research hasn't fully shown that this happens. It so happens that african wild potato contains beta-sitosterol.
In Europe, Japan and some other countries, Rye Grass Pollen extract is used as a prescription drug. It contains beta-sitosterol. Studies haven't shown if it works as good as other prescription medications, however it does help with some BPH symptoms. Cernilton is the brand name you may see, and it happens to be the one most studied for effectiveness making it a more reliable choice.
